We are ankles deep in mud and snow season right now and it feels like a battle keeping our active home clean! Luckily this year is better since I adopted a system to manage the mess. Basically, I had a meltdown last winter, resulting in hours researching how to contain the muck and the best doormats to deal with the elements.
If your house is full of mud, snow puddles, and salt bits, these tips will certainly help:
Limit Entrances

Aside from barricading the back door, limiting the flow of shoe traffic into your humble abode could significantly reduce the amount of mess tracked inside. After all, the greatest solution to any problem is a preemptive strategy.
Shovel the Back Porch Too

Even if the rear entrance is secured enough for a zombie apocalypse, sometimes you simply need access to the backyard in the most inconvenient of times. Keeping it accessible could require some maintenance, which will surely pay cleanliness dividends in the long run.
Stomp Mat – Outside Front Door

For the inevitability of mud and snow smuggling itself into your home, the proper equipment should always be available to deal with any earthly incursion.
Back Door Boot Scraper

Inside mudroom or outside after initial stomp mat (yes, two mats on the front porch before the door. – I put these out for mud season. Better safe than sliding across the kitchen floor.
Add an Absorbent Mat Inside the Door

Have a Shoe Tray Just Inside

This one’s a no brainer. Who in the modern age, particularly in regions hit by mud and snow, does not have multiple footwear options? Not only are you prepared for any weathered scenario, but you’re also able to pick up some home decor points.
Have Dogs or Tots?

Keep old towels near the door or lay them out where mats end. Make them as big as possible so they must walk across them.
Lastly, if there’s snow, there’s mud, and eventually it will find its way inside. Luckily for 2022, several products exist online that could help alleviate the mess that comes with the season of slippery.
